MAZDA CX-5 VS JEEP CHEROKEE
If you’re looking for a new compact SUV, both the Mazda CX-5 and Jeep Cherokee make for great picks. Both of these vehicles can get you where you’re going capably and in style, but the question is, which has more to offer drivers in the Doral, Miami, Hialeah, Kendall, and West Kendall, FL, areas?
To find out, Ocean Mazda compared them side-by-side in this 2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Jeep Cherokee comparison.
PERFORMANCE SPECS
If you like your SUVs to pack a lot of power, you’ll enjoy what’s under the hood of the base trims of the Mazda CX-5 and the Jeep Cherokee.
The base trim of the Cherokee rolls with a 2.4L MultiAir® 2 Tigershark® I-4 engine that generates 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque.
The Mazda CX-5, however, has a standard Skyactiv®-G 2.5L I-4 engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine also includes a unique feature called Cylinder Deactivation, which improves efficiency without sacrificing performance.
It does this by moving from four cylinders to two during light-load driving conditions, like highway cruising, to save fuel. Without this kind of feature, Jeep drivers may find themselves stopping to fill up more often during long road trips.
CARGO SPACE
Both the Mazda CX-5 and Cherokee offer plenty of cargo space for your towels and umbrellas when you hit the beach. In fact, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee has enough room for five passengers, with 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 also seats five passengers, but provides even more cargo space, with 30.9 cubic feet behind the second row for your cooler, boogie boards, and whatever else you need to bring along.
With the seats folded down, the Jeep Cherokee offers 54.7 cubic feet of total cargo area, while the Mazda CX-5 offers 59.6 cubic feet of cargo volume. That’s a difference of one bicycle or standard-size suitcase.
With more cargo space, drivers in the Mazda won’t have to leave anything behind when packing for a weekend away.
SAFETY TECHNOLOGY
As you and your family head toward your next vacation destination, you can count on either of these SUVs to help you get there safely.
Both the Mazda CX-5 and Jeep Cherokee are well-equipped for highway driving with standard Blind Spot Monitoring that alerts you to other vehicles in your side blind spots. This helps make merging much safer, although you should still be sure to look over your shoulder first.
The Mazda CX-5 makes a Traffic Sign Recognition feature available, too, which uses cameras to read road signs like Stop, Do Not Enter, and Speed Limit signs.
All information can be presented on the available Active Driving Display, which projects important data like speed limits, current vehicle speed, and turn-by-turn navigation on the windshield. This helps you stay informed while keeping your eyes on the road.
This feature isn’t available to Jeep drivers, so they may find themselves looking away from the road more often to retrieve vehicle and navigation information.
