Why Should You Change Your Oil?
Your engine has a lot of moving parts and making sure that those parts move properly is very important. Oil serves as a lubricant to make sure that your engine stays cool and doesn’t rub parts up against each other.
Not replacing your oil on time can lead to a lot of engine malfunctions that may eventually cause your engine to fully seize up. Before that happens, though, your car will likely warn you with an engine pressure light.
If you don’t pay attention to that oil pressure light, you’ll start to notice a few things wrong with your engine. The first thing you might notice is that there’s an oily smell wafting through your cabin from the engine. Your powertrain may even begin to get hotter than usual or maybe even fully overheat.
If you start to hear a knocking sound coming from your hood, that’s a sure fire sign that you should get your oil changed at our service center as soon as possible. This is caused by engine parts moving up against each other without proper lubrication. Not changing your oil after this will eventually lead to your engine seizing.
When to Change Your Oil
The exact time to change your oil often depends on your driving style and the car you drive. However, we can generally pinpoint when to change your oil to about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. This is the recommended oil change period given by most manufacturers, so generally speaking, this is a fair range to be in.
Driving style plays a role in determining oil change periods, as well. If you only drive your car for short distances and leave it sitting for prolonged periods, your mileage may not be high, but the oil will become old. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have your oil changed every six months even if you haven’t hit 5,000 miles yet.
When in doubt, it’s best to check your oil levels every month. Checking your oil levels is easy! Simply pull out your dipstick with your car stopped, wipe it off, dip it back in, and then check it again. If your oil is thick and dark or below the full line, it’s time to get an oil change performed.
